Redactwizard DICOM Research: Local AI-Assisted Medical Image Analysis for Research and Education

Medical imaging data plays an important role in modern research, education, and the development of new imaging methods. At the same time, such data requires careful handling, particularly with regard to privacy, responsible data processing, and a clear distinction between experimental use and clinical application.

Redactwizard DICOM Research is a portable Windows application for the local viewing, exploration, and technical handling of medical image data. The application combines a comprehensive DICOM viewer with support for common image formats and an optional AI-assisted image understanding function.

Redactwizard DICOM Research is designed for research, education, training, software evaluation, and other non-clinical applications. The AI function is expressly not intended to serve as a medical diagnostic system.

1. Medical Imaging Locally on the Desktop

Many modern AI services for image analysis operate in the cloud, requiring image data to be transmitted to an external service. For medical imaging data, this may introduce additional privacy, security, and organizational requirements.

Redactwizard DICOM Research takes a strictly local approach: The application runs directly on the Windows workstation and performs AI image processing locally. No cloud service is required to analyze the displayed image using the integrated AI function. The local model is included in the portable application package.

This makes Redactwizard DICOM Research particularly suitable for environments where image data should remain on the user's own workstation whenever possible.

Important: Local processing does not automatically mean that every use of personal medical data is legally permissible. DICOM files may contain information such as patient names and patient IDs. Before processing personal medical data, users and institutions should therefore determine whether an appropriate legal basis and the necessary organizational and technical safeguards are in place.

2. Research and Education Rather Than Clinical Decision-Making

Redactwizard DICOM Research is specifically designed for non-clinical use cases.

These include, in particular:

Area Examples
Research Medical imaging research, exploratory analysis, and AI evaluation
Education Teaching, demonstrations, and training in medical imaging
Software Evaluation Evaluation of AI-assisted image understanding and image-processing workflows
Image Exploration Local exploration of DICOM datasets and common image files

Typical users may include researchers, educators, students, radiologists, physicians, and other medical imaging professionals, provided that Redactwizard DICOM Research is used for non-clinical purposes.

The application is not intended for clinical diagnosis or treatment.

3. AI-Assisted Image Understanding

The optional AI function can describe the currently displayed image in natural language and answer questions about the image.

This can, for example, be used to explore how a multimodal AI model interprets medical image content or what information it attempts to derive from a particular image.

The underlying model has been further trained for medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) tasks. According to the available model information, approximately 200,000 medical VQA records were used for fine-tuning.

The generated responses are nevertheless probabilistic model outputs. They may be incorrect, incomplete, inconsistent, or misleading.

The results should therefore be treated as experimental or educational assistance and should always be critically reviewed.

4. No Diagnosis by AI

The most important distinction for Redactwizard DICOM Research is the clear separation between image exploration and clinical decision-making.

Redactwizard DICOM Research is not intended for:

  • Diagnosis
  • Screening
  • Detection or exclusion of diseases
  • Treatment decisions
  • Patient triage
  • Prognosis
  • Patient monitoring
  • Treatment recommendations
  • Clinical decision support

AI-generated output does not constitute a medical finding, diagnosis, professional medical assessment, or treatment recommendation.

Using AI-generated output as a basis for decisions concerning the care of an individual patient is therefore outside the intended use of Redactwizard DICOM Research.

5. DICOM and Common Image Formats

Redactwizard DICOM Research is not exclusively designed as a DICOM viewer.

The application allows users to directly view and explore DICOM datasets and also supports common image formats for general image-based workflows.

This makes Redactwizard DICOM Research suitable, for example, for research datasets, teaching materials, demonstrations, software testing, and exploratory image analysis.

For research and educational purposes, the use of anonymized, de-identified, or synthetic datasets is particularly recommended whenever the specific purpose does not require the processing of personal data.

6. Privacy-Conscious Use of Medical Imaging Data

For medical imaging data, technical capabilities and legal permissibility should be considered separately.

Redactwizard DICOM Research provides a technical environment for local processing. The application does not determine whether a particular dataset may legally be processed.

Research projects involving personal health data may be subject to institutional requirements, data protection procedures, consent requirements, legal bases for processing, ethics requirements, and additional organizational safeguards. Health data receives special protection under the GDPR.

Redactwizard DICOM Research should therefore preferably be used with datasets for which the permitted use for the intended research or educational purpose has already been established.

Local processing can help avoid transmitting data to external cloud AI services, but it does not replace a data protection assessment.

7. Local AI Without an Additional Cloud Service

Redactwizard DICOM Research is provided as a portable Windows application. The complete package is approximately 2.3 GB, with the AI model required for local processing already included. No traditional installation is required.

Once the application has been deployed, no additional cloud service is required for the integrated AI image-analysis function.

The basic workflow can be represented as follows:

Windows Workstation Medical image data
Local AI Model Image understanding
Generated Result Description or answer

The image does not need to be transmitted to an external AI provider for the integrated AI analysis.

8. Suitable for Research, Training, and AI Evaluation

Redactwizard DICOM Research can support a range of non-clinical workflows.

Medical Imaging Research

Researchers can open DICOM datasets locally, explore image material, and investigate how a multimodal AI model responds to particular image content.

Education and Training

Educators can present image material locally and use the AI function to generate image descriptions or questions and answers as a basis for discussion and teaching.

AI Evaluation

The software can be used to examine AI-assisted image understanding under local and reproducible conditions and to critically compare generated results with the actual image content.

Technical Development

Redactwizard DICOM Research can also serve as a local environment for testing image-processing workflows and software concepts.

9. PDF Export for Documentation and Education

AI-generated results can be exported from Redactwizard DICOM Research as a PDF document.

The export can include the generated response together with the associated image context and can therefore be used for documentation, research, or educational purposes.

The privacy, copyright, licensing, and other usage conditions applicable to the underlying image material continue to apply to exported documents.

In particular, when preparing teaching materials, users should verify that the relevant image material may be used and shared for the intended purpose.

Redactwizard DICOM Research itself does not grant additional rights to medical images, studies, publications, or other content.
