Redactwizard 2: Local AI Document Redaction Without Forced Cloud
Redactwizard: Professional Document Redaction on the Local Windows Desktop
Whether you are working with legal documents, medical records, or confidential corporate files, redacting and pseudonymizing sensitive information can be a time-consuming part of everyday document workflows. Redactwizard is a professional Windows desktop application that combines local AI-assisted detection, OCR, PDF editing, manual redaction tools, and batch processing without requiring confidential documents to be uploaded to a cloud service.
Redactwizard is available in two editions: Legal and Pro. Both editions are designed for local document processing. Pro additionally provides specialized AI models, Office document support, native PDF vector redaction, and an optional external AI chat workflow.
1. Why Local Processing Matters for Data Privacy
Many online document-redaction services require users to upload sensitive files to third-party servers. Depending on the type of document and the organization involved, transmitting confidential information to an external service may introduce additional privacy, security, contractual, or professional-secrecy considerations.
Redactwizard takes a local-first approach: document processing, OCR, and integrated AI detection run directly on the Windows PC. The required AI models are included with the application and do not require a separate model download from a server.
This makes Redactwizard particularly suitable for workflows where documents should remain under the user's direct control.
Good to know: Redactwizard Pro also includes an optional external AI chat workflow. Before content is sent to an external service such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, personal information can be pseudonymized locally within Redactwizard. The actual transmission to the external AI provider remains subject to that provider's privacy, security, retention, and contractual terms.
2. Two Redactwizard Editions for Different Workflows
Redactwizard is available in two editions designed for different requirements.
Redactwizard Legal
Legal is the compact edition for professional local document redaction and anonymization.
It includes:

- Raster PDF output
- Four virtual workspaces
- Local archive and recycle bin
- Billing Timer
- Optional 4-digit PIN protection
- Clio integration
Legal is designed for users who primarily work with PDF and text documents and need a straightforward local redaction workflow.
Redactwizard Pro
Pro is the advanced edition for more specialized and complex document workflows.
It includes four integrated local AI models:
- PII Primary for general personally identifiable and sensitive information
- PII Helper for structured identifiers such as IBANs, BICs, credit card numbers, SSNs, VINs, IMEIs, and cryptocurrency addresses
- Medical for medical and clinical information such as diseases, diagnoses, treatments, medications, tests, and examinations
- Legal EU for specialized legal entities and terminology
Pro additionally provides:
- Native PDF vector redaction
- Full raster PDF output
- DOCX, ODF, XLSX, and PPTX support
- Structured Office document processing
- Local pseudonymization
- Optional external AI chat
- Four virtual workspaces
- Local archive and recycle bin
- Billing Timer
- Optional 4-digit PIN protection
- Clio integration
The two editions therefore differ not only in the number of AI models, but also in their supported document formats and overall workflow capabilities.
3. Local AI Detection Across 100+ Languages
Automatic detection of personally identifiable information is powered by integrated AI-based entity recognition.
Both Legal and Pro provide a PII model supporting more than 100 languages, making Redactwizard suitable for multilingual documents and international workflows.
Pro extends general PII analysis with three additional specialized models.
PII Primary
The PII Primary model focuses on common personally identifiable and sensitive information, including people, organizations, addresses, contact information, locations, financial information, and other PII categories.
PII Helper
The PII Helper model provides additional detection for structured identifiers that benefit from specialized recognition, including IBANs, BICs, credit card numbers, SSNs, VINs, IMEIs, and cryptocurrency addresses.
Medical
The Medical model focuses on medical and clinical content such as diseases and diagnoses, treatments, medications, tests, and examinations.
The Medical model supports German and English.
Legal EU
The Legal EU model provides specialized detection of legal entities and terminology such as courts, legal provisions, lawyers, court decisions, contracts, regulations, organizations, companies, and other legal concepts.
The Legal EU model is primarily focused on German-language legal content.
In Pro, the available models can be used individually or in combination depending on the document and workflow.
4. Vector Redaction vs. Raster Output
A common problem with PDF editing is simply placing a black rectangle over sensitive text. In such cases, the original text may remain underneath and could potentially still be selected, copied, or extracted.
Redactwizard provides different PDF output methods depending on the edition and document requirements.
Native Vector Redaction in Pro
Redactwizard Pro supports native PDF vector redaction.
Where reliable processing is possible, affected PDF content is modified directly within the PDF structure while unaffected content can remain as native PDF content.
This preserves the advantages of a normal PDF while processing the content selected for redaction.
Full Raster Output in Legal and Pro
Both editions support full raster PDF output.
With raster output, every page is rendered as an image and the redaction becomes part of that image. The original PDF text layer is not retained as normal selectable text on the rasterized page.
Raster output is particularly useful for complex PDF structures, problematic source documents, or workflows where preserving the original text layer is not required.
For highly sensitive documents, the resulting file should always be independently reviewed before distribution or publication.
5. PDF, Text, Office, and Batch Workflows
Redactwizard supports different document workflows depending on the edition.
| Editor / Workflow | Formats | Core Features |
|---|---|---|
| PDF Editor | .pdf |
AI detection, manual redaction, OCR, barcode redaction, vector redaction in Pro, raster output |
| Text Editor | .txt |
Text editing, search, masking, and local processing |
| Office Editor | .docx, .odf, .xlsx, .pptx |
Structured document processing in Pro |
| Batch Processing | Multiple files and directories | Automated bulk processing with AI, OCR, and processing logs |
Legal focuses on PDF and text processing, while Pro additionally supports Office document formats.
Office documents can be analyzed and edited structurally, including paragraphs, tables, and other supported document elements.
Because complex Office files may contain additional XML structures, embedded objects, revisions, or other components, automatically processed Office documents should always be reviewed before distribution.
6. OCR for Scanned Documents
Redactwizard includes OCR for scanned PDF documents.
This allows text-based analysis even when the original document consists primarily of scanned page images.
Recognition quality depends on factors such as image quality, resolution, rotation, typography, and document complexity. OCR should therefore be regarded as an additional processing step rather than a guarantee of complete text recognition.
Handwritten text cannot be reliably processed by the integrated OCR.
7. Manual Redaction and AI-Assisted Workflows
AI detection is designed to automate the identification of sensitive content, but no automated recognition system can reliably identify every possible piece of information.
Redactwizard therefore combines automated detection with manual editing tools.
Users can manually work with elements such as:
- Rectangles
- Freehand areas
- Polygons
- Blur
- Text
- Stamps
- Bates numbering
These tools can be used for content such as signatures, stamps, handwritten notes, and graphic elements that may not be reliably handled by automatic entity recognition.
Blacklist and whitelist functions provide another layer of control, allowing terms to be explicitly included in or excluded from automated processing.
Saved filter settings can also be reused for recurring document-processing tasks.
8. Batch Processing for Larger Document Volumes
Redactwizard supports batch processing for users who need to handle multiple documents rather than working with files individually.
Legal supports batch processing for its supported PDF and text workflows.
Pro expands these workflows with its additional AI models and Office-document support.
Depending on the selected workflow, OCR, AI detection, redaction, and processing logs can be incorporated into batch operations.
9. Additional Features for Professional Workflows
Redactwizard is designed not only as an AI redaction tool, but as a broader local document-processing environment.
Four Virtual Workspaces
Both Legal and Pro provide four independent virtual workspaces. These can be used for different clients, projects, cases, or document collections.
Multiple documents can be opened in parallel and organized using tabs within the workspaces.
Local Archive
Both editions provide a local archive and recycle bin for managing processed PDF documents locally.
Pseudonymization
Redactwizard supports local pseudonymization of identifying information where available.
Personal information can be replaced with consistent placeholders so that document context remains understandable without unnecessarily exposing the original identities.
In Pro, this can also be used as part of the workflow before content is sent to an external AI service.
Billing Timer
The integrated Billing Timer allows working time to be recorded directly within Redactwizard.
PIN Protection
Both editions can optionally be protected using a 4-digit PIN.
Clio Integration
Redactwizard also provides Clio integration for workflows involving Clio matters and documents.

For highly sensitive documents, an independent human review of the final output file is strongly recommended before distribution or publication.
