Data Extraction: The First Step Towards Data Privacy
Data privacy starts with detection: Before data can be anonymized, it must be accurately located. Here are the most important approaches to data extraction for data privacy:
Rule-based Extraction (Regex)
The classic method for structured data. Predefined patterns
(regular expressions) are used to find data such as IBANs, social security numbers, or phone numbers.
Advantage: extremely fast and precise for standardized formats.
Named Entity Recognition (NER)
AI-based procedures that understand context. NER recognizes whether "Müller" is a person, a location, or a company. Even when names are hidden in running text, the software identifies the entity reliably. This is the heart of modern anonymization.
Layout & Context Analysis
Sensitive data is often found in tables, forms, or at the edges of documents. This method analyzes the visual structure of the document to correctly assign data based on its position and the surrounding labels (e.g., the word "Name:" to the left of the entry).
Semantic Classification
Instead of just searching for keywords, the document type is determined. If the system recognizes a "medical certificate" instead of an "invoice," more specific extraction rules are applied automatically to isolate particularly sensitive health data.
Extraction before Anonymization:
- Rule-based Extraction = Data is "searchable"
- NER (AI) = Data is "understandable"
- Layout Analysis = Data is "locatable"
- Classification = Data is "sortable"
Effective anonymization software is only as good as its ability to identify sensitive information in unstructured data piles in the first place.
