PDF & DOCX: Document security without hidden layers

In many law firms, legal departments, and companies, a dangerous misconception prevails: a purely visual overlay of text sections is sufficient to redact sensitive data. However, conventional methods often leave behind reconstructible text layers and metadata. Redactwizard breaks with this uncertainty and establishes true Data Protection by Design.

Visual overlay is not enough: Anyone who merely covers sensitive personal data in PDFs or DOCX files with black bars often leaves the original text unchanged in the deeper file layers. Clever attackers or simple extraction tools can restore this content in seconds. True redaction must be structural and irreversible.

Structure-preserving, irreversible redaction for PDF

Redactwizard does not simply overlay the PDF text. Instead, it completely eliminates the risk of reconstructible content through two secure export methods that generate a completely new document – without metadata, without text layers, without invisible content.

Cleaned Plain Text

Here, a new PDF is created directly from the cleaned plain text. Since the critical data was removed beforehand, it does not flow into the target document at all.

Pixel-perfect rendering

The original layout is completely redrawn and rendered. The redactions are irreversibly "burned" directly into the reconstructed layout.

Irreversible redaction and pseudonymization for DOCX

Even with Microsoft Word documents, Redactwizard goes far beyond cosmetic changes. Instead of just highlighting or visually overlaying text, the solution intervenes directly in the code.

Redactwizard replaces the masked text passages directly in the internal XML structure of the DOCX document (word/document.xml). The result is a document where the original text at the masked positions is simply no longer present in the content.

Remove metadata and history at the push of a button

A real security risk in DOCX files is often unseen attachments. Comments and track-changes histories are reliably removed from the file. Document metadata (author, editing history, company information in file properties) as well as sensitive content in headers and footers can also be eliminated completely – simply at the push of a button.

The most important benefits at a glance:

  • No text layers = Personal data cannot be extracted, reconstructed, or technically recovered.
  • XML security = Direct exchange of masked text passages in the DOCX structure instead of mere painting over.
  • Metadata cleanup = Automatic deletion of author info, comments, and track-changes at the push of a button.
  • Data protection by design = A completely new document guarantees maximum legal certainty when shared.
